An Interview With Eric Kaplan – Owner of K&S Landscape Company
Q. How did you get into the landscaping business?
A. I started cutting lawns in the neighborhood I grew up in at 12 years old with a push mower. Each year more and more neighbors asked me to do their yard and when I got my drivers license, I bought a pick up truck and a larger mower. After 2 years of college at Wentworth Institute of Technology, I decided that I really wanted to do landscaping full time. I started K&S Landscape Company in 1984, I am an MCLP and MA Certified Pesticide Applicator. I am mostly self-taught.
Q. What is your favorite part of the business? What do you do best?
A. My favorite part of the business is seeing the finished product and seeing the transformation that occurs at a job site. My job organization and doing things in the most efficient order is definitely among the things that I feel I do best.
Q. What advice would you give to someone starting out or wanting to be in the business?
A. I would advise anyone starting out to be educated , and always looking to learn more, be customer service oriented and do what you do well and don’t try to do too many things.
Q. What do you see for the future of landscaping?
A. I see that landscaping will continue to grow, but will be increasingly more difficult to attract and retain good employees; and that regulations will continue to hamper our efforts to provide quality service.
