Our 2024 Jimmy Fund Walk Hero- Colin Martinsen
Weston Nurseries is honored to have Colin Martinsen as our Jimmy Fund Walk 2024 Hero!
Colin is a 3 ½ year old enthusiastic boy who is obsessed with any and all cars, especially garbage trucks. He loves playing baseball with his older brother and enjoys riding his scooter. Colin is also attached at the hip to his baby sister, Maggie.
He takes the role of “older brother” very seriously.
Like all other children his age, Colin has a few movies on repeat. Currently, his favorites are The Polar Express and Zootopia. Colin loves ice cream, but he LOVES his stuffed rabbit, “Harry” more. He will not go anywhere without Harry.
Like any other 3 ½ year old, his mom Kate, shares that he loves “looking for trouble” and keeps both her and dad on their toes. Colin is living his best life, and everyone couldn’t be happier!
This is Colin’s story as shared by his mom:
Weston Nurseries is thrilled to share that Colin is CANCER FREE! It has been a journey for Colin and his family, but they are so thankful for the support that the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Institute have provided.
“Not long after Colin was born, he was diagnosed with an overgrowth disorder called Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS) that about one in every 13,000 kids is diagnosed with. Among other things , kids with BWS have a predisposition to certain childhood cancers and require quarterly cancer screenings until age 8.
For two years, we rode the rollercoaster of what many refer to as “scanxiety”––the increasing fear that would bubble up and consume us every 3 months as we waited to see whether or not our baby would get cancer. Last May that “scanxiety” became a reality. Colin was diagnosed with a type of kidney cancer called Nephroblastoma (also known as Wilm’s). Shortly thereafter, he had a port placed into his little chest, and started chemotherapy where once a week he would spend all day at the Jimmy Fund for treatment.
We are SO thankful that because of these screenings, his cancer was caught early and this past January Colin turned 3, Cancer free!
Now that his first victory bell has been rung, it’s back to regular cancer screenings for years to come as kids with BWS can many times be 2-3x survivors. Through diligent screening with Dana Farber, the hope is that if/when this cancer comes back or another, they will catch it early, increasing the chances of a good prognosis. So, for now, our focus is getting Colin back to doing what all 3-year-olds deserve to be doing.” – Kate Martinsen
Thank you for helping Weston Nurseries and the Such Devotion Team raise funds for Colin and for children just like him. Every little bit helps, and we welcome the whole community to join our walk team on October 6, 2024.
We have been a proud sponsor of the Jimmy Fund for many years and last year we were in the TOP 10 corporate teams for most funds raised. We are hoping to do it again this year. We appreciate your support and thank you for helping us reach our goal!
